Hi All,
I have been experiencing some really slow speeds on my Shaw internet connection (400 - 500 KBPS) and I wonder if folks on various service providers would be interested in comparing speeds. You can go to speedtest.shaw.ca and check out your download speed. I am curious what Telus is giving.

I'm with Telus in Marysville. I did your test and registered at 4.9 Mbps for downloads. I've always heard Shaw is faster and that was my experience when I lived in the Calgary area. I switched to Telus after moving to Kimberley because Shaw had multiple outages my during my first year here. I decided I would rather be online and slower than offline.

| I have just talked to Shaw and they theorize that a whole bunch of people are in town for the holidays and using computers at the resort. Basically they are admitting that they haven't installed the capacity needed to maintain high speeds and will be looking into improvements. Might just have to ask them for a rebate on my monthly bill if this keeps up. |

My speeds in Marysville here on Shaw high speed are currently:
Download 1 Mbps
Upload 432 kbps
Ping 110 ms
My desktop is directly connected to my wireless router. A laptop is online using the wireless router.
What are the optimal speeds?

Hi Dianne,
Shaw advertises High Speed Lite as having speeds up to 1 mbps and High Speed as having speeds up to 7.5 mbps. I think when traffic is low I often get between 4 and 5 mbps out of my shaw highspeed connection. I am currently (Sunday afternoon) getting about 1.1 mbps which is better than the 400 -500 kbps I was getting all last week, but is still not very good. If you bookmark the speed test webpage you can try it at different times of the day and see how it fluctuates. The more people online with Shaw the slower it gets. |

I should have mentioned when I posted that result that I was working on a laptop via a WiFi connection. We have multiple devices connecting through the router at any given time. |

| Well, the Christmas crowds have been gone for several days now but the speeds have only increased marginally. Today was the first time I got over 2 mbps on Shaw High Speed. It would be great to hear from other folks about their speeds as measured at http://speedtest.shaw.ca/ |

Telus and Shaw are brutal in this area ... there's basically nothing you can do.
After years of being choked by my Telus bandwidth I turned to Shaw, and it's the same.
But whatever you do, don't get Bell. |

Looks like shaw has been making some improvements this spring. I am now getting speeds of over 10 mbps which is about 5 times better than it was in the winter.
